Today is notes day — as in, ideas that come from notes. Imaginary ones! A very famous poem by William Carlos Williams is based on a note on the kitchen table. There are some great short stories that are about mysterious letters or notes. They also make excellent starters for mystery stories. Try one of these.

Fiction: Imagine a very windy day, where a character has a piece of paper blown into their face (you decide where they are when it happens). They manage to grab the paper and it has words on it. Start a story with what is written on the piece of paper and go from there.

Poetry: Write a poem that is a note you imagine you will leave on your kitchen table, or your desk, for someone.

Nonfiction: Think of an important letter or note you have received — what was it and how did it change something in your life? Describe how it was given or left for you, what it said, and what happened next. This will provide you with a ready-made structure for a short memoir piece (and if you aren’t comfortable with it being memoir about you, turn it into a short story).
