Eglise Saint-Eustache

Paris, France

Stone columns soar

to a vaulted ceiling

webbed with arches.

Everyone whispers here

but still there is the beep

and whirr of cameras,

the occasional irreverent flash.

Some light a candle,

sit in silence,

take time to remember or believe.

Tourists rush in,

snap, stroll and leave,

feel no compulsion to stay –

perhaps they are afraid

of what contemplation may bring.
