Cows Are Beautiful

A poem, a poet’s note and a poetry writing prompt

Jerseys are, I know,
the way they look at you

with their large, soft eyes
fringed with curling lashes,

their round noses
that glisten in the early morning

light, their smooth
tan skins, rolling stomach

and pointed hip bones
like runway models
ambling across a green carpet.

Their hooves are neat
black shoes without buckles,

their tails flick and swish
with elegant abandon

but it’s their ears
most of all, alert,

directed straight at you
always ready to listen –
what more could you want?

Poet’s note: Clearly I was brought up on a farm. I have a longstanding knowledge and familiarity with cows. But that doesn’t always mean you can write about them in a way that’s fresh and different.
