Almost Spring

A poem, a poet’s note and a poetry writing prompt

Hatless in the wind
brushed by blossom
I push against invisible hands

hair whipped into tails
strands in my eyes
the world is striated

hold my hand
winter is not over yet
and the nights are long.

Poet’s note: I think the seasons of the year must be one of the most popular topics for poems, perhaps because the weather affects us in so many ways. For me, spring always feels like the end of darkness, or at least greyness, even though I don’t live in the far north of the world. The beginnings of spring, when you feel that little bit of hope rising and see blue skies and blossom, is like a cusp, the perfect moment to write about.

Poetry prompt: Rather than choose a season to write about, choose the cross-over time, perhaps between summer and autumn, when you first notice cooler nights and less heat, or trees turning orange. Write a poem in which this time of seasonal change reflects a time of change in yourself, something you want to reflect on by using the season’s change as a metaphor.
